Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery

Learn more about the benefits and process of blepharoplasty surgery in Newport Beach, CA.

Blepharoplasty: The surgical eyelid lift.

Your eyes are often the first thing that people notice about your appearance. They are undeniably the most crucial aspect of facial attractiveness. Even after a restful night’s sleep, loose and puffy skin around your eyes can give the impression of tiredness, sadness, or an older appearance.

Today, thanks to numerous advancements, there is a procedure called blepharoplasty that can help rejuvenate your eyelids. This procedure aims to restore a more youthful, alert, and healthy look to your eyes.

Patients typically experience a significant improvement in the appearance of their eyes after undergoing blepharoplasty. Not only does it enhance vision for some, but many patients also report feeling more alert and energized. At California Eye Associates in Orange County, we pride ourselves on providing compassionate and innovative treatments.

Before and after bleph

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting droopy eyelids. The surgery involves removing excess skin, muscle, and, sometimes, fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This procedure has cosmetic benefits and can improve sight in those with severely sagging eyelids that hinder their vision.

By creating a firmer eyelid contour, blepharoplasty can contribute to a more youthful and rested appearance. It’s an effective treatment for individuals looking to reverse the effects of aging around the eyes or improve obstructed vision.

Not sure if surgery is right for you? We also offer several minimally invasive options for eye rejuvenation.

As a general guideline, it’s important to note that insurance typically does not cover blepharoplasty as a cosmetic surgery. However, if your eyelids are obstructing your field of vision, the procedure may be considered “medically necessary” and could potentially be covered.

Before undergoing surgery, Dr. Kurteeva will thoroughly assess the condition and health of your eyes and discuss various aspects, including your vision, tear production, use of contact lenses, medications, and expectations. These details, combined with factors such as your age, skin type, and ethnic background, will enable both you and your surgeon to make an informed decision regarding the surgical technique, the extent of the surgery, and the type of anesthesia to be used.

Our dedicated team is committed to providing compassionate patient care and utilizing innovative treatments. Dr. Kurteeva’s experience and commitment to cutting-edge technology will ensure you benefit from the most advanced techniques and achieve positive outcomes. Contact us today to see if blepharoplasty is the right treatment for you.

Your procedure will be conducted at Newport Bay Surgery Center, the premier outpatient surgery center in Orange County dedicated to eye surgery and conveniently situated on Newport Harbor, adjacent to Pacific Highway and HOAG Hospital.

On the day of your surgery, please arrange for a companion who can assist you in traveling to and from the center. Blepharoplasty is typically performed with a local anesthetic, and you may be offered a mild sedative to help you feel at ease. The entire surgery usually lasts slightly over an hour, depending on how much tissue is removed.

Dr. Kurteeva will meticulously remove excess skin, muscle, and fatty tissue from the upper eyelids, particularly in the inside corner of the eye, where it tends to accumulate. Incisions are carefully made along the natural fold of the skin, ensuring that as they heal, they become virtually imperceptible with time.

Bruising and swelling are common after the surgery, typically lasting for about a week to a month. In some cases, it may take longer. To reduce swelling and bruising and minimize discomfort, using a cold compress and keeping the head elevated will be helpful. Eye ointments and/or drops may be prescribed to keep the eye moisturized and clean.

Most patients experience minimal or no pain and may not require pain medication. It is normal for the eyes to feel sticky, dry, and itchy for about a week after the procedure. Special care should be taken when cleaning around the eyes during the first week or two.

Stitches are usually removed within seven to ten business days after the surgery. Once the stitches are removed, makeup can be applied to conceal any bruising. Wearing sunglasses can also provide comfort in public. It is important to follow all instructions to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. Your well-being and successful recovery are our top priorities.

While the positive effects of blepharoplasty on your appearance will be immediate, it’s important to note that your final results may take up to a year to manifest during the healing process fully. Rest assured, your results can last a decade as you age, providing long-lasting benefits. Our commitment to innovative treatments and patient care ensures you can trust our expertise and cutting-edge technology to deliver positive outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best candidates for blepharoplasty are generally healthy non-smokers with realistic expectations about the outcome. Good candidates also have excess skin or fat around the eyelids, which may contribute to a tired appearance or even obstruct vision. A consultation with a qualified surgeon is necessary to determine if blepharoplasty is appropriate for your specific needs.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, including infection, dry eyes, difficulty closing eyes, temporary blurred or impaired vision, and the need for revision surgery. During your consultation, the surgeon will discuss the risks and help you understand the procedure’s benefits versus the potential complications.

While individual recovery times may vary, most patients can return to normal activities within 10–14 days. Visible swelling and bruising usually subside within 1–2 weeks, but complete recovery with full results can take several months. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative care instructions and plan to ensure a smooth recovery during your consultation.

The incisions for blepharoplasty are typically made along the natural creases of your eyelids or inside the lower eyelids, making any scarring very discreet. Over time, these scars generally fade and become barely noticeable. Dr. Kurteeva will discuss techniques to minimize scarring and how to care for your incisions to achieve the best possible outcome.
